Champions League matchday 3 results: PSG beat Barcelona 4-2, Liverpool come from 2-0 down, Foden hat-trick for City

PSG and Liverpool are the only clubs with three wins from three after Tuesday’s nine games. Barcelona lost for the first time this season, Manchester City beat AEK 5-1, and Napoli finally got off the mark in a seven-goal game.

Tuesday 20 October was the first half of Champions League matchday 3, and it delivered 40 goals in nine games. The biggest of them settled the meeting of two perfect teams in Paris: Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 and, with Liverpool, are the only clubs to have won all three league-phase games so far.

PSG 4-2 Barcelona: four goals in the final 20 minutes

For most of the evening this was a close, high-quality game. Désiré Doué gave PSG the lead in the 38th minute, and 19-year-old Xavi Espart equalised for Barcelona shortly after half-time. The last 20 minutes were wild. Lucas Hernández headed PSG in front in the 72nd minute, Lamine Yamal ran through to make it 2-2 seven minutes later, and then PSG pulled away with goals from Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz, who tapped in Achraf Hakimi’s cross.

Doué was named player of the match, while Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García made several saves to keep the score from being wider. It was Barcelona’s first defeat in any competition this season, after nine straight league wins and two Champions League victories. They now have six points. The more pressing question for Barcelona is fitness: they host Real Madrid in El Clásico at Camp Nou on Sunday, five days after a demanding night in Paris.

Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal: Mac Allister leads the comeback

Liverpool kept their perfect record the hard way. Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona put Villarreal 2-0 up early at Anfield. Alexis Mac Allister headed in from a corner and then scored again, Ronald Araújo levelled, and Florian Wirtz scored what proved to be the winner. Tani Oluwaseyi’s late goal for Villarreal made for a tense finish. Rio Ngumoha was named player of the match.

Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens: Foden’s hat-trick

A week after losing 4-2 at home to PSG, Manchester City responded with a comfortable win. Elliot Anderson opened the scoring, Stavros Pilios equalised for AEK, and then Phil Foden took over with a hat-trick, one of his goals coming from a one-two with Rico Lewis. Rayan Cherki added the fifth with a neat turn and finish. City have six points from three games; AEK have three.

The rest of Tuesday’s results

Napoli 4-3 Bodø/Glimt: Matteo Politano scored after 53 seconds and Scott McTominay scored twice, his second a header with about 15 minutes left. An Odin Bjørtuft own goal made it 4-2 before Sondre Brunstad Fet’s late reply. It is Napoli’s first win of the league phase.

Stuttgart 1-1 Atlético Madrid: Jamie Leweling scored just before half-time, but Julián Álvarez equalised within a minute of the restart, set up by half-time substitute Ademola Lookman. Atlético finished with ten men after Morten Hjulmand was sent off.

Sabah 1-2 Borussia Dortmund: Serhou Guirassy scored both Dortmund goals, his 21st in 27 Champions League appearances, after Aden McCarthy had equalised for the Azerbaijani club.

Fenerbahçe 2-2 Slavia Praha: Oğuz Aydın and Mason Greenwood scored inside 11 minutes, but Lukáš Provod pulled one back and substitute Pavel Kačor equalised with a 90th-minute volley. Slavia have their first point.

Roma 4-0 Slovan Bratislava: Mario Hermoso, Nahuel Molina, Niccolò Pisilli and Donyell Malen, from the penalty spot, scored. Slovan have now lost 11 Champions League matches in a row.

Porto 0-1 PSV: Guus Til’s tap-in gave PSV their first win of the league phase. Porto are still without a point after three games.

Champions League table: what Tuesday changed

PSG and Liverpool lead with nine points from nine. Barcelona and Manchester City are among the clubs on six, while Napoli, Roma and PSV picked up their first wins. With eight games per club, the target is the top eight, which go straight to the round of 16; teams from 9th to 24th enter a two-legged play-off. In 2024-25, the first season of this format, eighth place needed 16 points, so PSG and Liverpool are already more than halfway there.

What’s next: Wednesday’s games

The second half of matchday 3 is played on Wednesday 21 October, with kick-offs at 18:45 and 21:00 CEST (00:45 and 03:00 Beijing time on Thursday). The headline game is Bayern Munich against Arsenal, who have six points and have not conceded in Europe this season. Real Madrid host RB Leipzig before the Clásico, Inter host Shakhtar Donetsk, and Como welcome Manchester United. Follow every score and the live table in the SportPulses Champions League section.
