A 1–0 win at Napoli headlined a strong opening week for Premier League sides, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa all winning.
Arsenal produced one of the most impressive away results of Champions League Matchday 1, winning 1–0 at Napoli on 9 September — a tough first assignment against a side now coached by Massimiliano Allegri.
It was part of a strong week for English clubs. Liverpool beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Anfield, Manchester City won 2–0 at Porto, Aston Villa came through a five-goal game 3–2 at Club Brugge, and Manchester United swept Sabah aside 4–0.
Arsenal carry that form into Matchday 2 at home to Lille on 13 October, while Napoli travel to Villarreal the same night looking for their first points.
Domestically, Mikel Arteta’s side were second in the Premier League after five rounds with 12 points, three behind Manchester City.
