Brighton’s flying start: five goals at Coventry and a top-three place

A 4–0 win over Aston Villa and a 5–0 win at Coventry put Brighton third after five rounds, behind only Manchester City and Arsenal.

Brighton & Hove Albion have been one of the stories of the Premier League’s opening weeks. After five rounds they were third on 10 points, behind only Manchester City and Arsenal.

The tone was set on 23 August with a 4–0 home win over Aston Villa. On 13 September they went one better on the road, winning 5–0 at Coventry City — the biggest away win of the season at that point.

Brighton’s strong start comes in a season of upheaval among the league’s traditional powers, with several of the big clubs adjusting to new managers.

The challenge now is sustaining it. Brighton’s recent history shows that early momentum can fade over a long season, but the scoring numbers suggest this start is more than luck.
